ust about everyone has heard of the "undertaker" – he's the guy that buries the dead; and because death is so inevitable in every strata of our existence, he's found in just about every historic setting imaginable. However, few of us would recognize the title of the Overtaker, in spite of the fact that he is also someone who is all over the place.
The reason, of course, is the Overtaker is found in the Bible, and very few read that amazing work; and even fewer have the Spiritual discernment required to understand and apply such deep truth to our lives. Just as the Undertaker describes a profession, or the office of those who engage in the task of taking the dead under the Earth, the Overtaker is also an office, or a person, place, or thing which is used by God to fulfill His promise.
Although it's not widely known, even in religious circles (with the word "circle" derived from the same place where we get our much misunderstood word "church"), the Overtaker showed up in Egypt, where he passed over the homes of both the Egyptians and the Hebrews. In that ancient timeline, he overtook every family in judgment, except for those which were exempt because they had followed the instructions of the one who created the angel of death – the Overtaker.
There was another appearance of the Overtaker in Egypt that is not nearly as well known, but it's a very significant event as it prefigures things which are occurring in our time. Jeremiah the prophet had been pronouncing judgment on the Jews for turning away from the worship of the LORD, and God was bringing the king of Babylon against Judaea, as a judgment upon them for their apostasy.
A powerful faction in Jeremiah's time was headed by a militia leader named Johanan, and a false prophet as well – and both of them were urging the Remnant of the Jews to flee to Egypt to escape. Conversely, the LORD told Jeremiah that if the Remnant of Israel would turn back to Him, He would be with them in the midst of the wrath of the king of Babylon, who was advancing on what was left of Israel.
At the same time, God told Jeremiah that those who fled to the supposed shelter of the Pharaoh would inevitably die at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon:
"I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon….And when he cometh, he will smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity…Then it shall come to pass that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt; and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die" (Jeremiah 43:10,11;42:16).
At the same time, the LORD promised through Jeremiah that He would be with the Jews who remained in the promised land – and they would be preserved within the coming storm of a military assault emanating out of Babylon:
"Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel…if ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up…Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid; be not afraid of him, saith the Lord; for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand" (Jeremiah 42:9-11).
History shows that all these things came to pass, and most of what was left of Judaea actually did flee to Egypt – where they met a bad end. In sharp contrast to this, Jeremiah's word was true.
In our time, we have many false prophets who are urging that Christians in America flee this land of graven images, because God is going to bring death and destruction upon the USA in an unprecedented way. As usual, the half-truth of the serpent is in view, for God is indeed about to smite America, but the truth is still not in these prognosticators.
One of the primary failings of all false prophets is their inability to discern the Spiritual truth, and the foundation of that truth is anchored in the subject of identity. This is self evident, for these frauds are urging the believers make an Aliyah (meaning "ascent") to Jerusalem, under the mistaken idea that God is with Israel in a physical sense.
Ironically, the Jerusalem of today is identified in the New Covenant as Egypt in the prophetic book of Revelation! In that amazing book, we learn the truth about
"…the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified" (Revelation 11:8).
Thus, in an irony of ironies, the Jerusalem which is earthly, that great city which is said in the New Testament to be in "bondage" (Galatians 4:23), is Spiritual Egypt, even though it is physically in Judaea, which is where God told the ancient physical Jews there would be preservation.
Furthermore, the only real Jews today are those who are circumcised in their hearts, through the magnificent work of Jesus Christ – a roundabout way of saying the Christians are the genuine Jews.
"I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews, and are not, but are the Synagogue of Satan" (Revelation 2:9).
To reiterate these amazing role reversals, I'll rephrase both thoughts. Under the Old Covenant, the physical Jews were fleeing to physical Egypt, where they thought they would be safe. God told them through the prophet to stay in Judaea, and He would preserve them.
Under the New Covenant, the Spiritual Jews are fleeing to physical Judaea, where they think they will be preserved when, in fact, they are fleeing to Spiritual Egypt, where they will be overtaken and die!
The problem is obviously a confusion of physical geography with the true Kingdom of God – which has always been said to be "within you." The false prophets of our time, whom God did not call, are urging the Remnant to resist the truth of the Scriptures – to say nothing of the Spirit of the LORD.
As this nation may be broadly seen to be "mad upon her idols" (Jeremiah 50:38), American Babylon will indeed be burned, but the only wise course of action is to ignore the false prophets and, instead embrace the true LORD of glory:
"The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart" (Jeremiah 14:14).
The reason "Christians" (or those who ignorantly refer to themselves as the "Remnant") listen to false prophets, is they live in the tower of confusion where there is an identity crisis. This crisis is related to the fact that they don't know the LORD, nor do they even know their own identity in Scripture – so they follow the lying false prophets who lead them astray.
What is desperately needed to cut through the confusion, is to truly know Him, and you cannot do that from within the house of Babylon known as the incorporated church.
"Come out from among them, and be ye separate" (II Corinthians 6:17).
Once you truly know Him, He will show you your identity in Him, and when that occurs, you will not respond to the call of the false prophets:
"…he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers" (John 10:2,4,5).
Those "believers" who know not the LORD, but have been deceived into thinking they hear His voice, are following the false prophets – and they will all be consumed by the Overtaker:
"But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness….For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ" (I Thessalonians 5:4,5,9).
