Serpents Slay And Scorpions Sting Part III

THE THORNS AND THE BRIERS

s we continue our ongoing commentary on the Spiritual attributes, as well as supernatural identities found in the terminology associated with theSerpents and the Scorpions, we find the allegorical threads which identify the nature of these two factions extends well into other terms in the Old Testament.

At the risk of redundancy, I want to reiterate the phenomenal truth which has been revealed in the last book of the Bible. In parts I and II of Serpents Slay and Scorpions Sting, we showed the characteristics of "Death" and "Hell," which are given as proper names associated with the Pale Horse persona of Revelation 6, are simply additional word/pictures of the very same Serpents and the Scorpions. The 9th chapter of Revelation, where we find the actual term the "serpents," shows us they kill:

"…by these was the third part of men killed….for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads…" (Revelation 9:18,19).

On the other hand, earlier in the same chapter, we found the actual term "scorpions," however, they donot kill, but instead cause torment – a word closely associated with "Hell"

"And to them it was given that they shouldnot kill them, but that they should betormented…and they had tails like untoscorpions, and there were stings in their tails…" (Revelation 9:5, 10).

Thus, Death (which is closely aligned with "kill"), resonates with the Serpents, whereas Hell (which is closely aligned with non-lethal "torment"), resonates with the Scorpions.

These are the "two parts" which Zechariah says will be "cut off and die" – and they are sharply juxtaposed against the "third part" – that Spirit which is of the LORD – which the prophet says is His inheritance:

"And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, siath the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them…" (Zechariah 13:8,9).

This exact formula is also seen in the allegorical word/pictures found all over the Old Testament where the "two parts" are imaged in multiple fashions. For instance, utilizing the dual imagery ofthorns and briers, through the prophet Isaiah, the LORD says that He will remove his spiritual hedge from Jerusalem, and He will allow it to be overcome by those two factions which will overtake His "vineyard" – obviously yet another metaphor:

"And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem…What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof…and I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns…." (Isaiah 5:6).

The LORD goes on to say He will withhold the "rain" (another allusion to a Spiritual regeneration), so that the twin entities of "thorns and briers" will flourish, as a form of judgment upon His unrepentant vineyard:

"….I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it" (Isaiah 5:6).

Even as the LORD had previously blessed Israel, as they continue to remove their hearts far from Him and refuse to return unto Him, He removes the blessing and steadily increases the chastisement. The scope of this judgment, wherein the Serpents and the Scorpions – imaged as thorns and briers – will increase exponentially:

"And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns" (Isaiah 7:23).

This Spiritual desolation progressively envelops backslidden Israel – read His "vineyard" –  and continues to escalate, until the LORD Himself arrives to establish His righteousness through the light which is in Jesus Christ:

"Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire. And the light of Israel [read Jesus] shall be for afire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day" (Isaiah 10:17).

When John the Baptist declared that day had arrived, he used remarkably similar language:

"…he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his [threshing] floor, and gather his wheat [His chosen] into his garner; but he will burn up the chaff [the thorns and the briers] with unquenchable fire" (Matthew 3:11,12).

Here is Zechariah's prediction fulfilled, in that two parts [Death and Hell if you can hear it] are to be "cut off" but His redeemed [the third part] will be purified through the cleansing of His symbolic flame:

"And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God" (Zechariah 13:9)
